and why?
Anton's attitude to the Assault in this chapter was that he had no
interest towards any of the events that had happened that the Assault has
caused. Stories, news, novels or anything that involved the war was none of his
interests or concerns because it was a quite harsh time that he has been
through, the loss of his family and the undesirable memories.
2. How does Anton remember the war?
Anton remembers the war because the separation of his family.
3. What is his relationship like with his aunt and uncle?
His
aunt and uncle were childless; hence they treated him like their own son. Even
if they had a son, they wouldn't treat him the way they treat Anton. With Anton
they have a bit more sympathy raising him because he got separated from his
real parents.
4. How does he feel when the war is over and why?
“By
then it seemed like a message from prehistoric times, hard to imagine”; this
quote expresses his feeling and says that it was really hard for him to
remember the loss after knowing that Peter will never come back.

1. How does Anton feel about
returning to Haarlem?
When Anton returns to Haarlem he feels like someone going to a
whorehouse for the first time, as it is mentioned in the novel. In other words,
he feels unfamiliar and curious about returning to Haarlem.

The significance of the conversation between the students was their
fight over who’s supposed to go the military.

He compares the gap left by his home saying that it’s like a missing
tooth.

The
reaction to his old neighbors was that he was upset. He cared only to the
place, not to the people.
